First Steps to Successful Social Media in Business

First Steps to Successful Social Media in Business

Friends and clients are always asking me to help them with SEO and social media. Without getting into the nitty-gritty technical details, there are something anyone can do to help themselves have a successful online marketing plan.

Here are the basics...

  1. Facebook. Follow the rules. Only make one account for yourself. It should be personal, with your real name on it. Then make a Fan page for your business, with yourself as the administrator.
  2. Blog. The best blog is one that resides on your website, but yours doesn't allow for that. So the next best thing is to go to blogger.com and open a free account. Make sure it contains a link to your website. You should write at least one new blog entry every week. It doesn't have to be long, but it should be interesting. The title should be engaging too. Mention your business sometimes and link to it.
  3. Posting blogs. Every time you write a blog, post it. Post it on your fan page. Then post it on your LinkedIn and Twitter accounts.
  4. Daily posts. Several times each day, post a comment on your FB, LI and Twitter accounts. Say something helpful that people will appreciate or that will evoke comments. Read helpful articles and share their links or your opinion about them. When people see you have valuable things to contribute, they'll befriend you.
  5. Friending. Go through your entire contact database, every business card you ever got, and friend them on Facebook. Think of ways to add more people. Check out your friend's friends and friend the ones you think will add value. Now do the same on LinkedIn.
